This is a strange place, I am used to strange and dangerous places. The badlands were deadly even before the Great Collision. Here my memories failed me at first but slowly they start to return.
This place and the other "guests" are under attack by shades wielding weapons. They learn. At first they were easy to defeat, but with each new wave they grow stronger, smarter, more deadly and devious. One weapon becomes two, shields and guns. They run faster, dodge bullets, turn invisible and teleport. Each time they become harder to defeat and we take more injured into the building for treatment and yet there are few medics.
Some here are trained fighters, from many different worlds, yet many are civilians who need protecting. These shades are getting smarter, we need to get smarter. We're working well together, that much is proven, but now they can appear amongst us and attack before we can react, that's harder.
I close my eyes and focus, I filter out the now familiar noises of the people who surround me. There. I hear them approach. Almost imperceptible footsteps across the road, and now on the grass. I aim my gun and shoot. Got it! Yet still the others can't see it or hear it. I need time to reload and draw my dagger.
A memory returns from my cadet days. Not only can I sense them, hear them, I can pull these creatures out of hiding. Sometimes it's just me who sees them, but other times I can reveal their presence to others.
And so I try, I concentrate on where they are, the trees, the grass, the wind, the echoes as they bounce off the surrounding area and people. That's it!
"Over there" I call. People look and they see. It worked, my hunter senses have returned. Together we surround the shade and defeat it. At least until the next wave.
Later, to her surprise, I use my refound senses to regain my cap.
